Volunteer Opportunities
West Valley City urges residents and organizations to take pride in our community. The City is often approached with requests for ideas for various community service projects and Eagle Scout projects. The City offers the following suggestions for those who are seeking volunteer opportunities.
If you would like to be notified via e-mail about City service projects, please join the Volunteer Opportunities Notify Me list. An e-mail will be sent when new projects are posted.
Volunteer Computer Teacher
The Harman Senior Recreation Center is seeking a volunteer to teach senior citizens basic computer skills. Volunteers are needed 1 to 2 hours a week between the hours of 9:00 - 3:00, Monday through Friday. You can pick the time. If interested, please call Eileen at (801) 965-5822.
City Projects
Meadowlands Park Strip Project The Public Works department would like to beautify approximately 200 feet of park strip on Burdock Drive. The strip is along the eastern side of the Meadowlands Retention Basin. The Public Works Deparment will dig out the park strip, sterilize the ground, and furnish the weed mat and cobble rock. The volunteers will be responsible for installing the weed mat and placing the cobble rock in the park strip. A group of 10 to 15 people could complete the job in about 4 hours.
Public Works would need at least a 1 week notice to prepare the site and gather the necessary materials. The project address is the park strip located between 2966 So. Burdock Dr. and 2934 Burdock Drive.
Hillsdale Park Fire Hydrant and Curb Repainting The City is looking for volunteers to help repaint the fire hydrants and the curb marking the no parking area in the area of Hillsdale Park. The City will provide the paint and the volunteers would need to provide the painting supplies and tools.
Graffiti Cleanup Project West Valley City is looking for boy scouts who are looking to complete their Eagle Scout project or other groups looking to perform community service. The City has many walls and fences along main streets and other thoroughfares that are in need of repainting to remove graffiti or to unify the wall color. The City will provide the paint, but not the painting tools. It is up to the group(s) to gain access to painting supplies.
Want to help? If you are interested in finding out more about the project(s) or where in the City opportunities exist currently, please contact the West Valley City Public Education Coordinator (801) 965-5833.
Eagle Scout Projects
West Valley City supports the Boy Scouts of America program and tries to provide as much help as possible to scouts seeking the rank of Eagle. As per the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook, the purpose of the service project is for the scout to demonstrate skills in leadership, planning and carrying out the project.
To help scouts demonstrate leadership and planning skills, the City encourages scouts to find or create a project within the community. After identifying a project, the scout (not the parents or scout leader) should contact the City to see what assistance the City can provide or for approval of the project idea.
Potential Eagle Scout service projects will be listed above if the opportunity arises under “City Projects.” If you see a need in the community and would like to verify if the idea would be acceptable for an Eagle Scout service project for the City, please contact the Public Education Coordinator at (801) 965-5833.
Community Service Hours
The City occasionally needs help cleaning up parks, graffiti, detention basins or other projects that may not meet the hour requirements for an Eagle Scout service project. For those interested in performing community service hours, please contact the Public Education Coordinator at (801) 965-5833.
