The Stormwater Utility collects fees used to purchase new equipment, hire additional employees and maintain the city's storm drain system. Major roads and streets are swept more often. New storm drain maintenance equipment allow for storm drain boxes and catch basins to be cleaned regularly.
The city receives no federal funding to meet Stormwater regulations imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA mandates that cities with populations larger than 50,000 residents must meet certain storm water standards. The West Valley City Stormwater Utility pays for repairs to the existing drainage system as well as additional cleaning equipment and personnel that bring the city into compliance with the national standards.
