2021 Municipal Election Midterm Vacancy
The election of Karen Lang as the West Valley City Mayor during the 2021 General Election will create a vacancy on the West Valley City Council in District 3, effective January 4, 2022, when Mayor-Elect Lang is sworn into office. The City Council will fill the vacancy by appointment in compliance with Utah Code Ann. § 20A-510(1).
Qualifications for Candidacy
- Be a United States citizen
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a resident of the municipality or a resident of recently annexed area for at least 365 consecutive days immediately preceding the date of the election
- Be a registered voter of the municipality
- If elected from a council district, the person must be a resident of the council district
In accordance with Utah Constitution Article IV, Section 6, any mentally incompetent person, any person convicted of a felony, or any person convicted of treason or a crime against the elective franchise my not hold office in this state until the right to hold elective office is restored under Section 2-1-101.3 or 20A-2-101.5 of the Utah Code.
Interested persons may pick up an application and instructions from the West Valley City Recorder at City Hall,located at 3600 South Constitution Blvd., during normal business hours (7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday) between December 6, 2021 and December 30, 2021. The application, declaration form, and other related documents must be submitted and physically received in person by the City Recorder during the week of January 3, 2022- January 7, 2022 (8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday). All documents submitted are public record.
The West Valley City Council will meet on January 18, 2022 at 6:30 PM in the City Council Chambers of West Valley City Hall, 3600 S. Constitution Blvd, West Valley City, UT 84119, in a public meeting to interview all eligible candidates and appoint an individual to fulfill the unexpired term.
The term of the vacancy is through December 31, 2023. If the appointed member wishes to serve after that date, they will be required to file for candidacy in the 2023 General Election.
