The Development Section is responsible for the engineering review of all new commercial and residential development within the city. In this capacity the section also works closely with other divisions of the city including Planning and Zoning and the Economic Development Division.
Plans for all new development projects are routed through Planning and Zoning. The Planning and Zoning Division will provide information regarding the approval process.
Those planning development projects are encouraged to schedule a development review meeting where they can meet with representatives from the various city departments involved in the development process to ask questions and receive applicable information. These meetings are held on Tuesday afternoons.
Call Planning and Zoning at 801-963-3282 to schedule a time.
Storm Water Permits
Projects will be required to obtain a West Valley City Storm Water Management Permit. The Storm Water Management Permit addresses two separate components of storm water quality and is issued as two separate permits. The first component of the Storm Water Management Permit covers construction activities, and the second covers the post-construction (long term) storm water management of a proposed development, re-development, or other improvements. The construction Storm Water Management Permit may be issued prior to full plan approval to allow for early site grading - after the approval of a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). The postconstruction or long term Storm Water Management Permit must be completed prior to issuance of a building permit or other type of permit. Use this link for the required postconstruction or long term management plan template:
Application for stormwater permits is made through the West Valley City Permitting and Licensing Portal.
See Section 4.3 of the West Valley City Engineering Standards for more details.
