The West Valley City Youth City Council (YCC) is a group of exceptional high school students who either attend a high school located within West Valley City or who live within the city.
High school students often consider joining our YCC because they are interested in getting a better understanding of how government in West Valley City works. They are looking for an opportunity to become involved at the local level and to relay their thoughts relating to the concerns of our high school students to the City Council. The experiences these high school students get because of YCC are valuable to them on a personal level by adding to their understanding of the governmental process and gaining the ability to present information on issues to decision-makers effectively. This is a huge benefit, whether it be in the workplace or in higher education situations.
YCC members are also selected for their ability and willingness to get involved in their city and to represent it in a positive light. They offer support to the city’s Neighborhood Services staff at city-sponsored events such as National Night Out and represent the group in numerous community-service projects and educational activities throughout the year.
The structure of the YCC is modeled after the actual City Council, with an elected Mayor, Vice-Mayor, District Representatives, and a City Manager. A member of the Neighborhood Services staff works with the group, but the group’s activities are determined by the YCC members themselves. Membership in the YCC is a strong addition to a resume or college application, particularly if it is in a leadership position. It also provides an opportunity to connect with other students who share similar interests and to make new friends.

The West Valley City Youth Council is a group of concerned, active teens who attend schools within the city. Members of Youth Council have a strong interest in government, local issues and civic responsibilities. The Youth Council helps to give back to the community through learning activities and service projects. Involvement fosters a greater appreciation for our government and helps to bestow many skills that will be helpful throughout life. It also is a platform to interact with peers and make new friends. The Youth Council is a group that creates a close connection to subsequently work efficiently to represent the interests of the youth in West Valley City.
To be eligible to participate on the West Valley City Youth Council, applicants must be a West Valley City resident of high school age (9th through 12th grades) or attending one of the schools within the city. Members of the Youth City Council serve for a period of one year from their selection date. The election of officers by the Youth City Council will occur the beginning of June each year.
