Adoption Procedure Background
Animal Shelter employees are tasked with finding the best possible match for the animals in our care.
Utah state law requires animal shelters to follow two important steps before an animal can be adopted:
- Stray hold period: When an animal arrives at the shelter, we are required to hold the animal for five business days. This gives the owner time to locate and reclaim their pet.
- Spay/neuter requirement: All animals must be sterilized before adoption. After the five-business-day stray hold has ended, the animal is scheduled for surgery. Pets are typically available for adoption the day after their procedure.
Process
Adoptions are completed on a first-come, first-served basis once an animal becomes available for adoption.
Application and Meet-&-Greets
Prospective adopters are invited to visit the shelter and spend time meeting the pet they are interested in. Our staff will talk with you about the animals’ personality, needs, and home environment to help ensure the best possible match.
If the visit appears to be a good fit, you will complete an adoption application. Staff will review the application, and if there are no concerns, the adoption can move forward.
Disclosure
Applicants must be at least 18 years old or otherwise legally able to enter into an adoption agreement. Please note that submitting an application or completing a meet-and-greet does not guarantee adoption. All adoptions are subject to staff review and approval to help ensure the best possible match for both the pet and adopter.
