Snow Removal Policy

West Valley City Public Works Department is responsible for removing snow from more than 800 lane miles of streets for safer travel. The City prioritizes snow removal as follows:

  1. Main collector roads
  2. Priority routes in subdivisions (red routes on the map)
  3. Residential through streets (excluding cul-de-sacs)
  4. Cul-de-sacs and dead-end roads

Due to limited resources and depending on the storm, it could take 12-18 hours or more after a storm ends before a plow clears your road. If another storm passes before all the roads are cleared, the snow removal process starts over with the higher priority streets. Please wait 24 hours after a storm ends to call and request plow service.

During snow removal operations, each West Valley City resident plays a role in helping to keep roads and sidewalks free of snow and ice. 

  • Parking on city streets during a snowstorm or during the 24 hours after the end of the storm is prohibited. Police officers are authorized to cite residents if they are not in compliance with any ordinance.
  • Blowing or pushing snow into city streets is not allowed.

Homeowner Responsibilities

  • Clearing snow from sidewalks in front of their homes within 24 hours of a storm. (Please help your neighbors)
  • Clearing snow in front of your mailbox after plows have been through the neighborhood.
  • Removing the snow from around a fire hydrant. If there is a fire hydrant in front of your home, you need to help keep the hydrant accessible to the Fire Department.
  • Clearing snow from driveway approaches. Snow accumulated on the plow blade will be pushed onto the side of the road including in front of driveway approaches. We cannot respond to requests to clear driveway approaches of snow pushed from the roadway.

Frequently Asked Questions

City ordinance requires residents to move their cars off the street when there is a one-inch accumulation of snow or ice on the roadway. Cars parked on the street make it extremely difficult for snow plows to clear snow and ice from the pavement, especially in cul-de-sacs and on dead-end streets.

The plow operators are dispatched immediately at the beginning of a storm and stay out continually during the storm. They are responsible for clearing over 300 center-lane miles of city roads, some of which require four to eight passes.

Snow plows prioritize roads to plow as follows:

  1. Main collector roads
  2. Priority routes in subdivisions
  3. Residential through streets
  4. Cul-de-sacs and dead ends

It is the responsibility of the property owner to clear sidewalks of snow and ice adjacent to their property within 24 hours of snowfall ceasing.
